He has hit it correctly. My mother has the most beautiful clematis (also Mo.) He did not tell you to cut it back. Do that before the freeze. It will amaze you at how fast it will reclimb your trellis next spring. Cut 6" above ground and mulch over it.

No, it needs to winter over. What you need to do is to have a big buck of bark mulch and keep it dry, in the garage or something, then wait for the first time the ground freezes, when it is good and frozen mulch you clematis and walk away. What this will do is prevent the freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw cycle that sometimes happens in winter, and that is what kills the plant. Around April 15 when the ground starts to soften up and stay unfrozen, pull back the mulch and let the plant thaw. This will trigger vigorous new growth. Trust me, I've been overwintering hundreds of plants for years now.
