Since my desktop died, I am left with only my laptop which has a relatively small hard drive - 50Gb. I have over 200GB of music which is currently backed up to DVDs.

My IPOD has never been synched to this laptop - I would like to erase it's contents and start using it with this laptop. Because the hard drive is small, I would like to copy music from DVDs to the IPOD via ITunes (MUST be ITunes rather than a trhird party app - I like the funcitonality).

Will the fact that i will need to put different DVDs in everytime I synch the IPOD cause problems or wipe tracks from my IPOD if ITunes cannot find the original file (the DVD would not be in the drive)?

Set itunes to manually manage the music vs automatic. You will then need to drag the songs to the ipod from the DVD, but nothing will be errased off the iPod

You might consider getting an external HD. I have a 300Gb USB drive from Seagate that I keep my music on. Cost is around $150, but much easier to manage than what your talking about doing.

I'm with DoH. I have an external HD in which I keep my tunes. To me the best thing about this is the convenience that if the computer dies, your music is safe.

By having the external HD you can first take the time to download your tunes to the HD and then just sync your iPod.
