I consider petite to mean just that petite. Some one small, but perfect in all the right places. I was in the store the other day and I heard these ladies talking loudly, of course, about how cute all the petite clothes looked. They (there were three of them) were all about 5 feet tall and weighed about 300 pounds apiece. When did petite come to mean obese and short?

I have seen signs in the petite section of stores that say, "Petite: 5'4" and Under".
You're not the only one who is unclear about this! lol.
It is a category that deals more with height than anything else....however, I do belive that clothes are cut different according to proportions. I'm not so sure that obese people can comfortably wear petite clothes. For example:
I was in Kohl's a while back shopping for a plain white blouse. (I'm 5' 2" btw). I went to the Misses section and found a great looking shirt. I found my size and tried it on. It looked like a potato sack on me. I then went to the Petite section and found the exact same shirt (just in petite size), found my size and tried it on. The fit was much better. It cinched at the waist where it was supposed to and the circumference of the sleeves (or arm holes) was dead on. It was as if it was made for me. :-)
Having said that, I would almost argue that petite not only means short, but also "small frame". The clothing is just cut differently.

Petite can be any size. You do not have to be a size 1 in order to be considered petite. Because it has to do with your height, not your width or weight. People often get confused about this and think you have to be this skinny little twig, but this is untrue.
***5'4" and under is considered petite, so you could wear a size 20 and be 5'2" and you would be considered petite.***
Wally Y ... A woman that is 5'3" weighing 90 pounds and a woman that is 5'3" weighing 300 pounds are BOTH considered petite. It does not have to do with your weight.
Also, if you're tall and skinny...that's all you are. Just because you're thin does not mean you may be petite. 5'5" and above are normal-tall heights. These are not petite. And may I repeat a million times more...Petite means "SHORT".

I cant belive some of these answers..
I work in a plus sized woman store. A petite leg is under 5'6. When wearing a petite leg a woman does not have bulk in the seat of her pants. If a woman is too short to wear regular lenth pants you will see very obvious lines in the seat where it is too big. These "bags" as i like to call them actually make a short womans butt look really "low" and large.
a petite top is a shorter cut top. It is made for woman with short torsos, when someone with a shorty torso wears a top thats too long it actually makes them look shorter. thats about it folks..

Anyone under 5ft 1 and under is usually considered 'petite'
However, it depends on your body shape - I need petite trousers because I'm only a 27 inside leg, but I'm 5 ft 3 and big chested, so petite tops just don't cut it!

In general terms, petite means short and small.
But in retail, petite means clothing for women under 5ft4. It refers to height and not size.

petite is for anybody who is 5'4" or shorter. It is purely a height/proportion thing. and nothing to do with weight or body type. inseams are shorter, length of sleeves, etc. are all shorter.
you can be petite and plus size, etc.

Petite, for me, is all a matter of scale and balance. I know a 6' lady that is so petite and feminine that she makes me want to just cuddle and protect her. At a distance she is petite. She is slim, and her scale is right.
