Kumar is a hindu family name; i with to know which jati (caste) it belongs to.

KUMAR belongs to Potter community /caste of Sudra Jati. They are called Kumar in Eastern Indian States like West Bengal and Orissa. -

you are spelling Kumar, thats is not a varana or jati, but just a suffix to mention a male as kumari is female, but if it kumhar you are asking for, than it is shudra jati, again it is not a family name, but some times to hide the real family name which is a give away about the jati, people adopt kumar as last name, any way all this is meaningless and not important in todays world, lets leave it there, have a nice one.

Class comes by way of the Quality of the person, while Caste is nothing but a description of the person's profession. Shudhras have the quality to do only physical Labour and hence they are classified as such. Sudhras are those who have more negative energy and they use the same. Therefore their acts are mostly morally and legally negative. Just because the Negative energy gets transfered quickly in to the humans, Adhishankara wanted those Positive Vibrated persons to get away from them.
