If you upgrade, typically the answer is you will not lose anything...but notice I said typically. Strange things have happened during upgrades. I would recommend you go purchase a USB hard drive of sufficient size to copy your files you want to keep and then after they are safe, do a full installation as opposed to an upgrade which tends to clog up your hard drive with a copy of both Vista and XP.
Better safe than sorry.
Good luck,
Z

The text book answer to this is NO because you are using an upgrade version. If you were to reformat, and perform a clean install you will loose everything.
Having said this and having seen things go wrong, despite following the directions to the letter, I strongly encourage you to back things up first. It is a lot safer.
Now about an XP to Vista upgrade itself (which you did not ask about) - Ask yourself why you want to do this. Vista requires more processor and memory capacity than XP and many will find performance sluggish once they upgrade. The Vista benefits are marginal over XP for many users so after spending the time and funds to do this, they end up with nearly no benefit and a slower pc. Many appication software versions and many drivers will not fully or clearly work with an operating system change and this will mandate replacements of these items - also at added investment of time and funds. You will not fully learn of the need for change until after you have changed the operating system because these needs are not immediately apparent. Many application software versions claim Vista compliance but when problems appear, you learn that it is Vista compliant to a degree but certain functions do not perform properly or completely.
Vista is now getting its first real world trials and unforeseen issues have been identified and some have been resolved while others remain unsolved. Do you want or need to be part of the first phase of people who find the weaknesses?
My suggestions are:
1. Do not upgrade to Vista until after the first service pack has been released.
2. Do not upgrade to Vista unless there are absolute needs to do so and that these absolute needs are documented and validated as working in Vista.
3. Do not believe that your pc will work faster under Vista as it is not likely to do so.
4. While it may be "neat" to be equipped with the latest operating system, this "neatness" comes at a price that usually is not worth it.

If you were wiping out XP completely and installing the new version then you would definitely lose all data; but you shouldn't lose anything by doing just an upgrade. You should always back up your data anyway before you make any changes to your computer (you never know what may go wrong).

domicile windows xp has an option to repair, or reinstall, or perhaps improve. So i might say, no you will no longer lose your consumer documents. I even have had to repair a pair situations, yet all became there. there is the prospect that your shortcuts will would desire to be remade, yet whilst it rather is a sparkling domicile windows, then it could hit upon and bypass away them. you would be able to would desire to positive track the domicile windows settings, like motor vehicle restart after blunders, and reveal, firewall, settings. in case you have a 2d stressfulpersistent, reproduction your consumer documents documents over to it, in basic terms in case, as properly, bypass interior the direction of the menus, and shortcuts and make a itemizing of what's there, as properly your cyber web browser. in basic terms in case you do would desire to do an entire reinstall. i do no longer understand vista, yet i understand some issues are very choosy.
