I live in the U.S.A. in Oregon and I saw a really bright star or planet right before sunrise in the east and am wondering what it is.

Venus, but only for a few weeks.

You are seeing the planet Venus.

If you have a good pair of binoculars, or a small telescope, you can actually observe that it is not round, but has phases just like the Moon, because the orbit of Venus is inside the Earth's. Right about now, it is at it's highest, which means it is at a half-phase -- it will look like a circle cut in half, the same way that a half-moon does.

What you are most likely seeing is the planet Venus.
As I've told other people who've asked the same question, check it out with a pair of binoculars. Venus exhibits phases like the Moon.
It's pretty cool!

You probably saw Venus. Right now it is at it's
brightest. I wish I had the gumption to get up that
early and look at it through my telescope.
