I used to work to live. As I got older I fell into a career that I enjoyed. Nothing exciting, but it was something I could lose myself in and avoid other life responsibilities. So, I began to live to work. Big mistake, since I missed out on so much. I recently lost my job. Now I'm trying to find myself and my dreams again. Wish me luck.

I work to live, absolutely. I have no career--nor do I even consider it wise to work on one. Companies don't keep good workers anymore. You spend twenty years with them, and they cut you during a round of layoffs. They then hire someone new to do the same job for less pay. You should show loyalty to a company like that?

I've always found it pathetic when I've worked at corporations. Some of the senior workers almost salivate when you mention the CEOs name--and are quick to jump on anyone who talks bad about the company. Guess what? They get cut with the rest of the layoffs later. That's because companies DON'T care about anything greater than their bottom line. So to miss out on family events, get togethers, and spending time with friends in favor of crunching numbers for a company that doesn't give a sh*t is a pathetic waste of life to me.

There are those who would read all of this and say: "Yes, but what about making money?" All jobs pay--and let's face it: You will never get rich while working for someone else. Just deal with it! While the pay is far better, it's even hard getting rich working for yourself. Besides, while you're nuturing your career, a complete stranger is raising your children in daycare. A spouse you hardly know is likewise slaving for their career, and doesn't know your children any better than you do. All your friends are co-workers, and when you DO get out to spend time with them, all you talk about is work. That's living???

Definitely work to live, and if I somehow won the lottery (which would be odd, since I don't play) I would stop working immediately. Then I would die within a few years from a chronic case of sitting-on-my-@ss-doing-nothing-itis.
