You should take a strand of your hair (or a thin piece of thread) and put some glue on it and lay it across the place where your door and door-frame meet.
Be sure to place it lower down on the door (about where your shin is) so it's not easily detected. The reason to use hair or thread is because its thinness makes it hard to see.
Do this for all the doors and windows you suspect someone is coming in and out of. When you return, check to see if any of the hairs have been broken or detached.
It's an old trick I saw in a James Bond movie! Hope this helps.

All the suggestions about putting tape on the door are good. I used to stick a tiny piece of a gum wrapper inside the door, right about knee level, as I was on my way out . I also put things on my windows so I would know if someone was gaining access that way.
If things are moved or missing, there's a good chance someone IS entering your home uninvited. Make sure all your windows and doors are as secure as you can possibly make them. If you're lucky, it's just some unsupervised kids playing around (that was my experience), but your friend could be right about some weirdo coming in for some sick reason. Be very careful and good luck!

Put a piece of clear tape on the bottom of the door and attach it to the outside frame of the door, if the tape is not sticking to the door like it was when you put it there you know someone is coming in to your home and you should contact the police. Also if you have plush carpet vacuum your way out the door and if there are fresh foot prints in the carpet when you get home you will know someone has been there!

put some thing in the inside side of the door that will break when someone opens the door. If you come home and you find the object broken then someone is definitely entering your house.

Check Wal-Mart in the outdoor/hunting section. I recently saw some automatic cameras used for spotting game on the trails that could work quite well for you... just mount one outside or inside the front and back doors and you can get an actual time and date picture of the person

Buy the telespy intruder detecting phone. It calls you when it hears an intruder. I would also suggest changing your locks and NOT leaving a spare key outside. It could be a neighbor that watches you.....
Check it out @ ThinkGeek

Go to Radio Shack and get a webcam. For less than $100, you can monitor your home while you're at work. Also for less than $100, you can get a minicam and record the intruders.

now days you can buy cheap surveillance equipment that detects motion and records to your computer, dvr, or vcr.
that way you not only have proof, but images to show the police as well.
