Try the email lists "creativemachine" at yahoo groups, and various and sundry email discussion groups at quiltropolis.com -- thecreativemachine group there has had Claire Shaeffer as guest host there this week.

The two "Creative Machine/TheCreativeMachine" groups date back to Robbie Fanning's mail newsletter, The Creative Machine. Robbie decided to explore the possibilities of online gatherings of sewing enthusiasts, and started The Creative Machine list at quiltropolis.com, with a guest host every other week, including wearable art types, tailors, costumers, folks from the textile industry, patternmakers, drapers, etc. When Robbie moved on a few years after that, Threads magazine took it over for awhile, and then dropped it rather suddenly. A number of us were concerned because we'd developed quite a community, and decided (with Robbie's blessing) to open a yahoo group on the same format. The owners of quiltropolis also eventually decided to keep the original group going, with the same sort of guest host format every few weeks, so we have two groups with greatly overlapping membership, and lots of things to talk about on both lists.

Also, have you found http://www.patternreview.com? Even the free membership will get you into some good stuff.

Never have had a spam problem with any of these, though the quiltropolis groups are ad supported (an ad a day).

Oh yes, the sergers group at yahoo groups is also pretty lively (and less on topic than many)

And then there's the usenet groups alt.sewing and rec.crafts.textiles.sewing. Talk to your ISP and see if they have a usenet feed -- reading through google groups is possible, but not optimal.

About.com has a sewing column with a forum that is quite easy to navigate.

Delphi.com has several sewing sites also.
