I am having to pinch myself when I think about that event.
If I was standing on a river bank and saw a little boy drowning, i don't care what role I might be trying to fulfill, i would take my shoes and socks off and dive in.
Wouldn't you?
They may have radiod for help, but there were two of them!
Am I the only one who cannot get my head round this?
Police officer, fireman, nurse, or ordinary Joe Public, does it matter who you are - surely you dive in? Don't you?
I am very keen to hear from people on this.

well apparently the boy was not in site when they arrived? but is this just a cover story from the police to back each other up?
I agree - i think anyone would have tried to help - i personally cannot swim but if i saw someone in trouble i would try my hardest to help - even if that ment shouting my head off. Perhaps neither of them could swim, and where just thinking of their own safety. Although with two of them there they would have been there to back each other up.
Its really hard to judge when there were no other witnesses and its all to easy to say " well id have done it this way........"
The world is full of ifs buts and maybeas and no matter how many times its gone over that poor family have lost their beautiful child and my heart goes out to them. If i were in their position i too would be feeling angry and looking for answers, but im sure those two community officers are also having to come to terms with what happened and what the outcome may have been if things had been done differently.

In my opinion they should have discarded their roles as Community Support Officers and taken on the roles of men who were concerned that a child in distress needed help.
My immediate response was that I would have leaped into the water and tried my best to help. I would not even bother taking off my shoes and socks, no time to do that, drowning takes less time than that.
I still don`t understand what was going through their minds. Do they?

Awwww

COME ON NOW

the child was not visible
water was black

if I saw ANYBODY drowning, I would help, the two people in question would as well.

I would not just jump in either, I would spend 10 seconds to assess the situation
where are they?
is it safe to go in?
can I get them out from the bank?
is there more help on the way in case I get into difficulties as well?

Has it occurred to anyone that you dont need to be able to swim to be a community support worker so maybe the 2 support workers involved couldnt. Not making excuses because we would all like to think that we would be the first ones in the water to save that little boy no matter what job we do but unless you are in that situation you dont know how you would react. They did exactly what they are trained to do and it may seem stupid but it is for their own safety.

if you had any old joe public...they would have put the kids life first. not stood at the side deliberating whether or not their training covered this incident. the individuals concerned have to live with this forever now.

They didn't. When they arrived the little boy was gone under the water.

I thinks its disgraceful they just stood there!
I'm shocked and appalled
If it was me i would have done anything to help that boy
