I suppose if GWB was a Democrat then maybe he would not have so much criticism
I'm not an expert on politics but I have a gut reaction with Bush and I like him.
I know others see him in a different light. He treads a narrow road which is one of the most difficult in this life. I suppose it depends on

James M if US was a target it could close it's gates and defend itself. Europe could not protect us.

Oldschooldude5-I think you have got me wrong
I am not some naive young thing as you might think
I agree with most of what you said, and maybe to your surprise and others I like Mr.Bush, as a fellow christian I have been following his life, and to my mind and my husbands, he was right going into Irag, after all America did not attack first. It is a case of sometimes standing alone in decisions, which are not popular, but are not always wrong. I have family in America, and know it is a country with a big heart when in the past has been sanctuary for so many different people in the world.
What I was saying or meant to say is that if there was a world war and many were against America, would UK be better as part of USA, an ally and not an enemy. We have been enmies in the past! Heaven forbid all that of course, and it is a thought of mine.
Our countries are too alike as you said we are cousins. With hindsight we know all the answers.

Having seen the last 4 American presidents stomp on the world, it would not surprise me in the slightest if they didn't have a few tasty nukes pointed this way anyway. It's all about trust Plato my friend, GWB is on a par with Dick Dastardly as far as I'm concerned.

Go into Europe? Assuming you are referring to the UK - we are already in the European Community and why would Europe which is also a member of NATO(includes US and Canada) turn against the US?
Join with the USA???? Do you really consider that as a sensible after we were dragged into an illegal war with Iraq?
As for ruling ourselves, we already do this through Parliament with some powers devolved centrally to the EU commission. The idea of the UK splitting from the EU is crazy, as the we rely on it for jobs, investment, etc.
If you read and believe the newspapers (Daily Mail, the Sun etc) you will be getting a jaundiced view of the EU.

Hello Plato, have I missed something. I thought we were already in the European Community & had been for several years. That is why the Polish & Bulgarian people are now able to come here to work as their respective countries have just joined the E.U. Have no idea what you mean by Europe turning against the USA & the USA turning against us & we joining the USA. I thought we were the 51 state with Blair & Bush patting each other on the back. (joke) No we are British & will stay British. USA have already attacked us on more than one occasion with their so called friendly fire in the Gulf wars.

this is wrong! ;) 1. you are 'in europe' (where else would you be)? 2. 'europe suddenly turns against usa'. well, literally it hasn't happened, just yet. apart from that, are you suggesting you are better off in agreement with a country whose leader cannot read names of countries/leaders names properly and thinks that HRH is some 200 years old?? ;D 3. you ARE ruling yourselves! or, more precisely, the government YOU elected to rule for you. and although some people say that UK is yet another US state, this is just an ungrounded joke. regards! ;D

Genuinely, do you think the US would bomb the UK, our mother country? For what possible reason, except to assist her Majesty rid herself of occupying forces?
We didn't fight WWI in 1918 for our own economic interests as one wag in Yahoo! Clever (Germany) posted yesterday-we were a rural, isolated country. We went to assist our English cousins. Not our French cousins, not our German counsins, our ENGLISH cousins.
We could have cast a blind eye to the plight of Europe in 1939 even longer than we did (until 1941), except The Battle of Britain with its bombings of London, Coventry, etc., was a little to close to home literally and figuratively. This time there was economic interests present, but I ask you sincerely, WHEN are they NOT present with any nation?
Even though I remind myself daily that I'm older than you and have a profoundly different take on things, I am nonetheless surprised and taken aback by the masturbatory and virulent anti Americanism by much of the younger folks in the UK.
Very self-defeating, as 1) it won't make the US go away and 2) it will bias hypersensitive Americans towards the English, a desired outcome ONLY for those who want the sublimation of both cultures for their own pursuits.
The war in Irak is indeed immoral and appalling, at the hands of a swarmy president who probably hi-jacked the election in 2000. Woe that we were attacked in 2001, otherwise, GWB (Bushy) would have been like his sushi puking father: a one termer. I only wish I could tell you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I get the impression we're not even sure what tunnel we're in!
Aware Americans admired the UK for not joining with the EU and utilizing the Euro and frankly don't hold the English people in the same light as the continentals-the English are seen as different, somehow better, more reliable than their continental counterparts.
We consider the UK our lone friend and ally. But as is well known, there are no "friends" among nations, only those with similar interests. I could kill Bushy for his famous "yo, Blair" remark several years ago. The guy is just unreal.
But we're not lonely, as our nation is 3x the size of Europe and covered with 300 million people, who although perhaps a little fat and stupid, as per European café society, nonetheless fully understand the meaning of "let's roll!"
You must be more objective in your analysis of things. Is it possible that the fashionable anti Americanism seemingly running amok on your island nation is precisely the outcome certain factions wish? Certain factions that would see Britain down the "loo" as enthusiastically as the regular, go-to-work everyday Americans? I think there's a bit of a connection and a reflection that many Eurpeans are as MISinformed as some of my countrymen are UNinformed. A kind of ennui comes forward when one takes one's freedom and prosperity for granted, though.
If Moscow doesn't believe in tears, than Washington doesn't believe in quitting. Hence our unenviable position in the world today as its beleagured police, guarding the world's freedom. Wait until your freedom is "missing in action" and you'll likely perceive things about the Americans rather differently. After all, we were being bashed WAY before WWI, right?

Like it or lump it the UK is in the EU.
If you want to 'join' the USA no one's stopping you - providing you're not a suspect colour or religion and you've got skills which they need in the US - (that last one shouldn't be too difficult).
Personally I object to the UK being at the beck and call of a country whose President can go to Australia and pay tribute to all the Austrian soldiers fighting in Afghanistan.

I don't know who "we" is. Of course you should rule yourselves and do what is best for your country and the people in it. Don't turn automatically toward or away from the US. I know it's hard to imagine right now, but the US isn't always in the wrong.
I hope things get better on 1-20-09 when GW leaves office.

That's never going to happen. The media and papers in Europe like to trash the USA for ratings and sales, but trust me, the people who are pulling the strings in both Europe and the USA are bosom buddies to the last.

We kind of are in Europe (if you're talking about the UK).....
........and how exactly do you mean 'join' with the USA?
We are still one of the most powerful democracies in the world. There really is no need to to 'join' anyone.
