YES! In July, my husband and I went to the Dominican Republic to visit his mother who lives in the wilderness. (He told me it's called the "countryside." Uh-huh.) Anyway there's no running water in the wilderness for 99% of the people, and they bathe in the river. The agua in that rio gave me 2 different kinds of bacterial infections. I'm cured now, but I try to stay away from agua.
