Identity theft is when someone uses someone else's SSN and name. No identity thief uses their own name. If you run your own number through those same databases, you'll find you have 30 or so "associated" with your name. If 3 people go on a lease or two on a mortgage, those names SSN numbers all get associated with other. Some random person puts down Mickey Mouse and a random number on a form, suddenly Mickey Mouse has a new address associated with that name. Some staffer sets up an office for "Barack Obama for President" and puts their contact information on the lease, and suddenly there are multiple address and SSNs "associated" with Obama. Someone transposes a number and there's another one. If you closely examine the list, you'll pick up some of the errors. On Obama's list, some are Michelle's number. Some belong to aides (like the one at the Senate Office building). Some are numbers transposed. Look at the link to see the actual pages from the report. The 3 birth dates "associated" with Obama are "1890" (no day or month, but the number is from a lease on a building in MA that was built in 1890's -- careless landlord paperwork), 8/4/1961 (real) and 4/8/1961 (transposed numbers). Lists like this are the START of an investigation, not the whole thing.

Having more than one social security number is illegal. You are given your number either at birth or when you come legally to this country and that is the number you have your entire life. One is probably the original and the other is a fake.
There was a huge rumor going around when I was in college, it sounded really good but I knew it was a fake and so did several others, but yet there were still a few that believed it.
The rumor was that everyone is given two social security numbers and you could get your second one by mailing the government, filling out papers and sending them back in with the proper fees in money order form, thus getting the new number and having your "slate" wiped clean.
This was a scam that was later busted, but several of the people I went to college with fell for it and a couple of them almost got arrested because of using the "new" social security number. Personally, I thought it was rather dumb of them to even think such, but all are scammed at one time or another.

Unfortunately document forgery is a growing crime in the U,.S due to the mass influx of illegal immigrants. You never hear the feds address this nor prosecute those involved. Lawlessness seems to be the order of the day at the federal level. Contact your congressmen and voice your dissatifaction on the lack of enforcement of the current laws. Americans must raise their voice and be heard ..

I was adopted and have two SSNs. One was issued to me when I was born and one when I was adopted. It was in the 70's. Probably a mistake. I have only operated under one name and number but the other number is still tied to me.

The answer that said it is possible to have two if you get married or adopted is wrong. You might have your old one and new one but the number NEVER changes.
There is absolutly no legal reason to have or use two different numbers. It is a federal offense meaning serious jail.
The report site is.....

It is possible..
This happens when someone gets married or is adopted by another family. The have to change their last names with the SS administration and in the meantime this person will have two SS numbers, BUT using them both at the same time for work purposes is not legal
