One definition of "liberal" is "given freely or abundantly; generous." Perhaps the "liberal media" isn't really politically liberal at all. Perhaps it is liberal in the distribution of information. I mean we have 24 hr news coverage, the Internet, among other news sources. That seems fairly abundant to me.

The so called liberal media often tows the Republican party line. Not always though. Sometimes they break stories about torture in Abu Ghraib or black hole prisons or civilians killed by Blackwater security contractors. This is why conservatives have labeled them "liberal". It's an attempt to discredit the mainstream press and keep the Republican voters from reading or listening to it.

“The current state of the news media is partially to blame for the public’s general lack of information vital for responsible citizenship in a democracy. The news media has become an aspect of show business, offering merely infotainment. It has evolved into an entity that tends to function as a public relations agency for wealthy and powerful multinational corporations, members of Congress, the current Presidential Administration including the administrations that preceded it. The news media is being utilized as a political tool of suppression and propaganda by those in power, and propaganda is psychological in nature. Full of half-truths and utter misinformation, it’s an arrogant and very commercial strategy that is implemented because it appeals to emotions, fear being the main one relentless talk of national security, personal and community safety, can trigger childhood insecurities and indoctrinated views of authority.”
Teresa Stover

“Manipulators rarely advise you to seek new and diverse information or to ‘learn and research for yourself,’ it tends to be safer for exploitative and irresponsible leaders to keep their citizens in the dark; in their view less independent thought is better. Independent thought leads to an inquiring mind, a mindset that eventually leads to the questioning of authority figures, and that is the one thing that inadequate leaders do not want. When a leader discourages questioning of his/her leadership style, actions, and motivations, that is a sign that they have something to hide, that they may not be worthy of the public’s trust. A responsive leader welcomes and encourages questions from the citizens that have entrusted them with their safety, economic stability, and their confidence that a certain level of civility in society will be constant. Responsive leaders would be appalled, disappointed and disgusted if the public did not question such factors.” Teresa Stover

American media is owned lock, stock, and barrel by RUPERT MURDOCH.

NOT liberal in any way whatsoever.

“Rupert Murdoch, head of the world's largest media empire, has used his influential position to push an ideological agenda closely associated with U.S. neoconservatives. During the lead up to the U.S. invasion of and war in Iraq, the editors of Murdoch's 175 media holdings vociferously supported President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair's pro-war campaign. One British newspaper opined: "You have got to admit that Rupert Murdoch is one canny press tycoon because he has an unerring ability to choose editors across the world who think just like him. How else can we explain the extraordinary unity of thought in his newspaper empire about the need to make war on Iraq? After an exhaustive survey of the highest-selling and most influential papers across the world owned by Murdoch's News Corporation, it is clear that all are singing from the same hymn sheet. Some are bellicose baritone soloists who relish the fight. Some prefer a less strident, if more subtle, role in the chorus. But none, whether fortissimo or pianissimo, has dared to croon the anti-war tune. Their master's voice has never been questioned" (Guardian, February 17, 2003). “

No, I don't think the term "liberal media" has been bastardized for political purposes...

I know it has.

You are correct in your definition of liberal but the left wing in American has perverted the word to mean almost the complete opposite. The left wing bastardized the word liberal. In American political liberal has come to mean one in favor of greater government control and if you listen to the majority of media coverage they seem to support greater government control.

The main stream media in the US has a clear liberal bias. Unfortunately, the left wing liberal loonies who are in charge don't see their bias and think they are correct.
