What can they do at this point? How can they win these games? Is anyone as disappointed as I am today?

I am VERY disappointed. Having to score 10 runs every night to have a chance is not a good sign. I've been a Mets fan my whole life, even through those 100-loss seasons in the early 90s, and I have never seen anything like this.

Right now, I'm almost wishing that a team like the Phillies or the Cubs or Diamondbacks were in town, because that would give it that instant playoff feel, automatically adding that electricity to the crowd. I'm sick of the crowds at Shea the last few nights needing the scoreboard to tell them to make noise. Mets fans are better than that...I think the quiet simply comes from extreme worry, that's all. They'll be fine when there's a reason to get excited. That goes back to the players.

That said, they are still in first place, and believe it or not, they're still in competition for home-field advantage through the NLCS. They are still, to some extent, in control. They have been hitting. Maybe not clutch hitting, but the bats are working. Lo Duca is hot, Alou is on fire, Beltran is on the way, Delgado's hit a few shots, and Reyes is finally coming around. The problem, of course, is the pitching, especially the bullpen. It's a disaster.

However, I don't know why, but I just have a feeling that they'll figure this out just in time. I'm nervous about it, but I do think they'll hold on. I think it'll finally hit them that right now, they are quickly becoming the laughingstock of the league, and they will wake up. They need some kind of spark. Maybe Reyes will lead off with a triple tonight or something like that. Maybe Pedro will go seven innings. Maybe Willie Randolph will get tossed from a game and wake that Shea crowd up. Something, anything! But it better happen TONIGHT.

I've been saying after every bad loss "If this doesn't wake them up and get them focused, then nothing will." It now looks as though nothing will. They've played ten games against the bottom two teams in their division, and won four. Had they gone 7-3, which wouldn't have been unreasonable against that competition, this would be virtually over. Had they gone 2-5 instead of 0-7 against the Phillies, this would be over. Look back all season and you'll see many games they could have won with one more timely hit or one more out. This should have been wrapped up a long time ago. If they blow it, they'll know who to blame.

I'd also like to say that this is a new way they have of torturing me. They've had lousy years, years in which they hung around all season only to lose to a better team at the end, years in which they made big runs but came up short, years in which they made late-season charges only to sputter at the end, lost post-season series they should have won, but this will be the first time they've choked away a lead.

I was just looking at the standings 1 game ahead with 3 or 4 games left. It will be tough, but if they can hold on and win a few maybe get lucky and have Philly lose 1 they will.
