I need to use a neighborhood mechanic, who wants to be paid in cash. Hubby and I discussed paying via check as proof of payment.

This is my first encounter with this mechanic; when I told him I wanted to pay by check he said if I want to do business like that, then I should get another mechanic.
Not to mention, I was tee'd off at his response, but is there anyway I can draw up any document that he could sign - I guess a "promise of services rendered" so he will stand behind his work? Or should I just get another mechanic?

Get another mechanic! Anybody who objects to taking a check for payment is running his business off the books, and who knows what kinds of other stuff...[like, where does he get his parts?] Pay a little more somewhere else, get a written estimate of what's going to be done to your car [good shops operate this way] and leave a paper trail with both their paperwork AND yours [paying by check, etc.] so you'll have some leverage regarding service and parts afterwards.

A lot of small business people are honest with their customers, but like to dodge income tax. I wouldn't let the fact that this guy wants cash put you off if he's a good mechanic and not too expensive. Ask if you can get a receipt. That's as good as a cancelled cheque as proof of payment.

sounds to me like he wouldnt sign anything you drew up anyway. people often look for shade tree mechanics because they are cheaper. some of them are very good and some are real shady. since this guy only wants cash either hes avoiding the I.R.S. or some kind of court order of HES SHADY. I would recomend you take your vehicle to a reputable place and pay a little more. in the long run it will be cheaper than you having to pay 2 or 3 people for the same repair.

He wants to use it as a "Side Job" and the cash is so there will be nothing for the IRS to look at to say he is making more money then he is claiming. I'd look somewhere else, if his responses are bad they will get worst later! Case on a side job is OK but yes you do need a simple contract signed by you and him with two witnesses.

Get another mechanic and report this guy to the IRS.
