So I have met this guy on multiple occasions. Let me tell you something about him. When I was a kid in High School and College, I worked in the municipal marinas in South Haven, MI. This guy would come in with his 30 year old crappy boat, named "Blackhawk" of all things, and make us run around doing things for him like he was a big deal. The worst part was, he never tipped us once. NEVER. He tried to act like a big shot, but his boat was crap! After reading the article, it seems a lot of people thought he was a jerk too, unless of course they were rich as well, then they LOVED him. My question is this, do you think it matter how much money you have if everyone remembers you after your dead as being a jerk? Also, feel free to sound off if you got a Wirtz the jerk story too!

I leave you with this article as well.

Well, the world is a better place now, but the bad news is that his Empire still owns the Blackhawks.

Ray's Lover, never heard of the guy. Just fix the boat and belay the back talk swabby. Alot of teams have suffered backlash after the new stadium craze. Add Dom Hasek Tony Amonte and me, Tim O'Keefe to the list of great players Mr Wirtz had slip through his fingers. But remember this, he also had them at one point, when they were young and when price became an issue they were gone. For all the dumb trades ( Espo, Vadnais and Hodge for Martin White and oh i forget) he managed a team for decades which was not in the greatest of markets. Short of matching Winnipeg's (remember them) offer to Bobby Hull for $1million Canadian; what is it he is supposed to have done wrong? He gave Bobby Orr a shot when everyone said he was all done. That is more than the Bruins can say. How many cups have the American contigent of the original six teams won since WWII three or four? I mean c'mon, how much worse over the last fifteen years have the Hawks been than the Bruins, Rangers or even the Canadiens. Do you remember how bad the Wings were and for how long after Howe left and Redmond got hurt. How good a boat do you need in a river anyway? He could have done Wirtz, that's all I am saying. Sub Maria Nomine.

I don't think one way or the other on it. He led his life as he believed and now he'll have to stand in judgement.

I've known many average and poor people that were jerks so who am I to say, just by hearsay, if he was or was not one.

As to him "making" you run around and do things for him. If you worked at the marina and it was part of your duties then it was his right to ask for the services. If they weren't part of the duties and services of the marina then you had every right to refuse or to ask for compensation.

You only know one small bit of his life as it interacted with yours so you can't say that he was a jerk all the time. And for you to be so judgemental isn't all well and good either.

And thinking/saying his boat was crap. Well, maybe he loved his boat just the way it was. Or it had sentimental value to him. Who cares if you thought it was crap. And what does that have to do with his personality anyway.

My condolences to his family.

How does one qualify for a best answer to your tirade? Should I agree with you?
Not going to happen. It takes a lot of different stories to get a true picture of one person's life. So I'll take what you and a hand full of disgruntled Hawks fans with a grain of salt.
I know he did a lot of nice things so he wasn't all bad.
The polite and civilized way to act when someone dies is STFU if you have nothing nice to say. I think it applies here. There wil be plenty of days left for your venom, later.

Just because someone dies that doesnt suddenly make them a good guy. There are lots of people who die and have no one come to the funeral because they are just grateful that they dont have to deal with them any more. Money doesnt buy happiness and certainly doesnt teach you how to treat others He will be answering to his behaviour now to someone who has a lot more clount than you.

He seems like the "Harold Ballard" of Chi-town, I hope the Hawks have some good luck now that he's gone, but it didn't seem to help the Leafs when ol Ballard died.

Siince I never met the guy, I'll just say what I hope people who've never met me, say about me when I'm gone, "never met the guy, so I don't have an opinion".
I don't recall hearing a lot of good things about him, from people I know who have met him, though.

we all gotta bite it sometimes. i'm sure there were people in his life who mourn his passing, but i've also read a lot of personal accounts the past few days insinuating he wasn't the nicest guy.
