If a piece of cucumber is placed on the table for a few days, itbecomes soft. But it becomes hard andturid again if its cut end is immersed in water. Explain why the cucumber behaves in this manner.

this is aquestion related to diffusion and osmosis and maybe active transport too, but I don't know the answer!!!!

A piece of cucumber placed on the table for a few days loses its water content (water diffuses to the air) and becomes soft. That's why when the cut end is immersed in water, it becomes hard again because it absorbs back the water it lost.

When left in the open, the water contained inside the cucumber will evaporate away. This leaves the cells of the cucumber flaccid.
When it is immersed in water, the concentration of water is greater outside the cells of the cucumber, and therefore water moves down the concentration gradient, into the cells, making them turgid. This is osmosis.

water is evaporated out if its left out for several days.. then when u resubmerge it, th water diffuses back into the cells.... its called osmosis if it involved water, so in this case it is osmosis, and it is not active transport since there is no energy being exerted by the cucumber's cells to actually pump water in.. the area of lesser concentration of water is INSIDE the cell, therefore water diffuses in with no energy needed!

If this is a homework question, I believe your teacher wants you to find the answer on your own.
