true magnesium wheels were strictly for racing, they have the advantage of being lighter& more ridgid than an aluminim or steel wheel of the same strength & thus reduce unsprung weight. magnesium can be ignited from friction & burns at such a high temperature that it will melt any steel lathe or milling machine it is worked with if a dull tool causes too much friction or coolant flow is interupted.
it has been superseded by titanium in most applications where cost is no object. at least in airplanes, dont know about wheels.

Mag wheels are a kind of automotive wheel constructed out of magnesium metal alloy. They are popular in racing applications due to their light weight, and their aesthetic qualities make them desirable as aftermarket equipment among car enthusiasts. They are generally recognizable by their symmetrical spokes and high shine. Alloy wheels are automobile (car, motorcycle and truck) wheels which are made from an alloy of aluminium or magnesium. They are typically lighter for the same strength and provide better heat conduction and improved cosmetic appearance over "normal" wheels.

A Mag wheel is made from Magnesium and an Alloy from Aluminium and a fat wheel got the nick-name Mag back in the 6o's cause Aluminium Alloy was way to much back then by casting Magnesium Mag wheels was not so bad.... There's a difference between steel, Chrome and alloy wheels, but alloy is used as a short form of aluminum alloy.

True "MAG" wheels are made of magnesium. Not appropriate for the street, as they are easily damaged, and friction can cause them to ignite, with intense heat (magnesium is used in underwater flares).
Now a days, "MAG" wheels are a generic term for any alloy wheels.

Alloy generally means any metal alloy that's not steel, usually aluminum. "Mag" refers to magnesium wheels, although it also sometimes means aluminum knock-offs of wheels originally available only in magnesium.
