To hybridize: Simply take the pollen from one flower, paint it onto the pistils of another, harvest and plant the seeds, and within nine months to two years your newly created hybrids can bloom.

The easiest way to hybridize daylilies is to remove a stamen from one flower and brush its pollen onto the pistil of another flower. If pollinating has been successful a small, green seed pod will be at the former flower base & slowly enlarge and reach maturity within six to ten weeks, turning brown and spliting open to reveal glossy black seeds which you plant to form hybrids. The next two sites are in warmer zones & mention refrigerating seeds before planting.

Here's more info & illustrations (This site says that some types of daylily seeds need to be refrigerated three weeks before planting):

Detailed & illustrated info: "Seeds are air dried for 3 week before planting or storing in the refrigerator... Dormants require a period of cold storage to provide their required dormancy period. Dormant seed not give a period of cold storage may not germinate."

Daylillies are hybridized by careful, manual cross pollination. The resulting seeds are planted and if the new cultivar is pleasing, the plants are then propagated by division.
