because the rear wheels are close to the back of the vehicle which causes a lot of spray on the window. station wagons also have them

I have an 05 Matrix XR AWD hatch and I have a rear wiper. The new Mazda 6 sedan has a rear wiper as well. So did the Acura RSX.
One big reason is that since SUVs have larger roofs, water tends to roll straight off the roof and over the glass hindering vision. On a sedan the rear windshield is raked (angled) so water flows right off of it and into the channels alongside the trunk for drainage.
Another reason is the height of the vehicle. More spray is created by an SUV or hatchback because they do not have long trunk areas past the rear wheels. Thus the vortex of air created by these vehicles pulls the spray coming from under the car up and back so it covers the rear.
Next time in the rain take a peek at an SUV driving by and you will see the spray curtain behind it.
What kills me is the people who have rear wipers and never use them.

there are normal cars and trucks that have the rear window wipers. but the reason that u see them on a lot of the 4x4's is because the are made to go off road not that everyone uses them off road but the ones that do realy need the rear window wiper because of all the mud and stuff that gets on the back window and they need to see out that window.
Do not listion to Rick R he is retarded because a 2x2 is a bike and bikes do not have rear windows so they deffenently do not have rear window wipers. Hey Rick R cars are 4x2.

It has to do with the angle of the rear window and it's location relative to the rear wheels. Most hatchback's rear windows are positioned such that spray from the rear tires gets on them and blinds the driver's rear view. A non-hatchback vehicle design has the rear wheels in front of the rear window.

There are normal cars that has rear window wipers. It just depends on the manufacturer how they design the automobiles.

Sorry, but the airflow over the top of a saloon and to the end of the boot lid keeps the window clear. With a hatchback or wagon, the air comes up from under the car and throws water and dirt on the rear window.

Hatchbacks and Wagons which are considered normal cars almost always have rear window wipers.
So the actual question is why Sedans don't have them despite needing them.

The aerodynamics of SUVS cause dirt to collect on the rear window rapidly because they are flat and not convex like cars
