Cause aren't they the same type of thing? I just wanted to sign up for one because a lot of my friends have it (well, most have AIM), and I thought it'd be fun. But, which is safer? Which is better? Do they cost anything? Please recommend one and why you chose it. : )

For me I like Yahoo Messenger, both of them are free.
But if most of your friends are AIM, you should use AIM

You are right that both programs do the same things, have almost identical features, are equally safe (or unsafe depending on how you use them), and are free.
The difference is that AIM can only talk to people with AIM IDs, while Yahoo can only talk to people with Yahoo IDs. So what you need to decide is which the most of your friends use, and then get that one.
Or, you can go to http://download.com and look for a free program called Trillian. It is an Instant Messaging program which allows you to talk to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and others all at the same time. You simply create an ID with one of the services and then through Trillian can chat with all the others also. Howecer, because they program has to work with several difference Instant Messangers, it can not do some of the fancy features on the other programs.

AIM is lyk ok ok..itz nt that gud..if ur gonna choose b/w yahoo n aim ..then go 4 yahoo...
well but y nt msn??itz da bestt..among all in my opinion!!
