Yes, Core 2 Duos are good. I suggest the E6600 which runs at 2.4 ghz.
As someone said check to be sure your motherboard supports C2D and also check to see if it supports quad core. if it does support quad core I'd go with that instead.

I am confused about something you said though

The way I read it is that you are going to a brick and mortar store to buy the new cpu correct?

Any store you go to be it CompUsa, CircuitCity, BestBuy etc will charge you at least 1 1/2 times what you could get the same cpu for from NewEgg.com

At this moment you have choosen a very good processor, so don't worry about the performance of your pc at least for 2 years.
At the moment they are working on 4 core processors so tou will probably wont one after 3 years.

Would it be perfect for what?
If you are a gamer and enjoy fps games probably not as the best performance for many of them is found by blocking all but 1 CPU.
If you serf the net/email/IM its a waste of money and will probably force you into the latest piece of MS malware VISTA (their slowest, buggiest, prettiest OS to date)
If you are a high end programmer its great
so is it perfect? maybe

Did you check that is your motherboard support Core2Duo?
Core2Duo is pretty cool, but Quad core cpus are not expensive than Duo.
I recommend you Quad if you are possible to get it.

no i dont really think so, we dont have much applications yet which makes use of the duel capacity , some notable aplication which can make use of the dual processing are like in graphic processors(not games, degisners-like blender 3d)

try a normal good and high speed cpu
