Absolutely not.

“Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.” - Thomas Jefferson

If the government censors and controls the media, "We the People" will not have the ability to make informed decisions.

Every time the government tells people what they can and cannot report on (pictures of soldiers returning from Iraq is a good example), "the truth" suffers.

It is a shame that people must now depend on non-American sources (like BBC and The Guardian) to get the truth about what is happening inside our own country.

No, look at the situation in Burma. The government controls the media, so who really knows how many people were killed yesterday. It is one way to control outsiders coming in and trying to "revolutionize" their country. It is a smart tactical move if you are trying to stay in power. That is why dictators tend to control the media, nothing can be told to outsiders unless they approve it.

I don't know, we have a plethora of media laws already.
I see no need for prior restraint.,. ( Near vs Minnesota ).
We have libel, defamation, invasion of privacy and definitions of malice and actual malice already on the books as it is. There is not a need for government censorship and control of content - if it does not fall into several criminal categories. The short answer it, this is already happening.
We are better served by a free press.

NO!!
A THOUSAND TIMES NO!
Free speech is a double edged sword. There is going to be plenty of things people don't want to hear. But this doesn't mean we should silence the speakers.

On top of that, the government already does this under the pretense of "classified."

Not in the US. The First Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees free speech. I would not want my government to control the media.

They already are! Where have you been? To get accurate news, you need to go to the BBC or other international news sources. Next ask if they should monitor our phone calls & e-mails. I hope you are young & naive.
