Although i haven't had an epidural, i'd haveto say that epidural would be the best pain relief. With my first son i had gas and pethadeine which i dont think did a single thing for the pain and with my second son i had just gas and it made me so "high" although didn't help with the pain.

An epidural will give you the best pain relief. I had one with my 1st delivery. The epidural can work a little different for everyone. I think they placed mine just right because I felt no pain until the baby's head started to crown, but I could still feel pressure to know when I was having contractions and could feel enough to know when to push. It wasn't bad at all. Actually, I think I got lucky that it went that well. I'm a little more nervous this time around. My best friend just had her first baby and felt everything, even with the epidural.

We'll see, I'm 39 weeks now so it could be anytime....

Good luck to you!

I had an epidural with my first child. It lasted 35 minutes. The other two I had natural without any pain relief. I figured 35 minutes of no pain wasn't worth it. Walking through contractions helps a lot. They would not let me do that after I got to the hospital though. I did it the entire time that I was at home. Congratulations and good luck.

Please do some real research on the side effects of all medication before deciding if you should use them and what to use. Many women will automatically say "get the epidural!" but I don't think the decision should be that simple. Look at this website to learn more about epidurals and make sure to read the disadvantages part, because most doctors do not provide this info. to you. The site is not necessarily "for" or "against" epidurals, so you can trust the info to be unbiased. http://www.americanpregnancy.org/labornbirth/epidural.html

I had an epidural, and it worked wonders..I didn't feel a thing. Literally someone could have dropped an elephant down there on me and I couldnt' have felt it. The nurses kept coming saying are you ready to push, your contractions are right back to back..so I was like sure..so they get my legs all held up and they are like okay push with your contractions..so I sat there for a few mins and they are watching the monitor they were like you know you've missed several contractions. I was like oh, well I can't feel anything. They had to shut the epidural off. To me, I would rather push out another baby than have stiches again. Just my opinion.

Edit: Why did I get a thumbs down? Its my opinion and whoever gave it to me doesn't know what happened in my situation.

When I was first in labor, they put me in a spa/bathtub and that helped alot with the pain/contractions. Then I had the epidural later into the labor.

with my first son i had a epidural, i will say i'll never have another, my reason is i had one ripped from my back. but with my 2nd son, and a different hospital, i had a emergency c-section, and had a spinal block, ipersonally like the spinal block the best. good luck and congradualtions
