The lyrics for "Puff, the Magic Dragon" were based on a 1959 poem by Leonard Lipton, a nineteen-year-old Cornell student. Lipton was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem titled "Custard the Dragon," about a "Really-O, Truly-O, little pet dragon." Lipton passed his poem on to friend and fellow Cornell student Peter Yarrow, who created music and more lyrics to make the poem into the song

Actually it's a story about a boy who grows to be a young man and gives up the fun and wonderous things he believes to be childish. It is a comentary on the idea tha becoming and adult means giving up your imagination. It implies that we should be sadden to see the death of imagination and creativity.

yeah I just answered this one already tonight- it is not a drug reference. It is about growing up and leaving behind childhood things. I went to a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert and they answered this question. for pity sake does it have to be chiseled in stone before people believe that it is NOT a drug reference?..nah..I suppose that wouldn't work either because then someone would think..ohh..stone....
