My computer is about 4 years old. It is custom built. I would like to purchase an external hard drive to store my photo's on. How do I find out what kind of external drive to purchase and what would be the best kind to purchase for this purpose?

If it is a desktop computer I would suggest adding a second internal hard drive. Works a lot better and takes up less space around the computer (junky looking). Internals are not that hard to install. Just read the instructions and pay attention to where it tells you to place the "jumper" to set it up as a "slave drive".

An extenal drive is easier to connect and any should work but honestly I think you can get an internal one cheaper. They sell both at Walmart.

If you have XP, any USB external drive will work. The notebook size drives cost a little more, but they get power from the USB port so you don't have to use a power adaptor.

If your Computer is NOT XP AND NOT USB2.0:
It's not a good idea to get external Harddisk(HD)

else:
for good external HD
*get one that have USB and SATA interface for connect to PC
*get one that support both ATA and SATA
*If you want more flexible, get 2.5" External HD that not use power adaptor
*HD Size may vary for what you want. for photo, 80GB will fit your need (26500 photos on 7.2Megapixel)
