The peace pipe had tobacco. I don't know about you but, when I was a smoker, smoking used to curb my appetitite and not give me the munchies.
The tobacco is sacred. I was invited to a sweat lodge ceremony a couple of years ago and took tobacco as a "gift" for the hostess.
But if Cowboys and Indians did get the munchies, for whatever reason, I'd guess they ate beef jerky. The Southwest is still famous for it's beef jerky!

pumpkin..... and this is also where the creation of the jack o lantern came. they were stoned and carved the sucker up and tried to use it as a bong, but they noticed how cool it looked when the fire and smoke poured out of the pumpkin.
