To stand in a line at the office you'd think it's more like 70! Really, most U.S. citizens are horribly challenged when it comes to geography.
I think it would an eye opener for some of my fellow citizens to get out of the country. We are too insular and most haven't the foggiest idea of what's going on out there.
A lot simply aren't interested. And yeah, as stated above, it's not cheap to do it. Half of my travels were as military, the other half autonomous. The problem with the former is that when you go somewhere with the military you're often going for a reason that doesn't have anything to do with an interest in that country's culture. (Even if you're just peacekeeping.)
A guy I know, sadly, wouldn't go anywhere they don't speak English.
This is a big country that offers the full range of locales; from beaches to mountains to swamps and deserts. I haven't even seen all of our states yet. Most never do. It's hard. In Europe, one is often bordered by a completely different country with a different culture that isn't too far away and in the last decade and a half it's gotten much easier to get around over there.
Everyone should make it to a country in another continent at least once in their lives.

cause the other 90% do not or have NEVER traveled out of the country!
How sad eh?
That explains the rampant ignorance. Like, Americans believe the world begins and ends in America..... and that everything on the "Almighty" CNN is true and unbiased.
EDIT: Er.... "The Mrs" where on God's green earth have you been? oh! you guys so need a passport to get into Canada now....
oh, as of '08 ground travelers will definately need a passport.

It's just to crazy with the war and the anti-American sentiment. Just based on the remarks made by non-Americans here would make me not want to visit their country. Plus, I'm on the border of Canada and we don't need a passport to cross. That's the only country I visit outside of the U.S. I like Canada.

Maybe the answer is as simple as this...
You don't need a passport to travel within your own country. When you live in as country with so many natural outstanding features, you don't need to venture abroad.
Mountains? Rockys
Beaches? Florida, California, etc, etc.
Rock Formations? Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, etc, etc.
Is it really any more complicated than this?
