I disagree with you on this one Welshcake!
There are scary trolls about who hawk & hunt & hound folks for a bit of perverse pleasure...Thats the only reason why folks here make their profile private...
xx

Hi welshcake, I did it because of the abuse I got and the hateful, spiteful emails I recieved from people. I even changed what was written about me in my profile because people did (and still do) have a go at me about my profession, up to and including calling me a liar and/or saying that I should be sacked from my job.

Some people would go through my Q&A and use things they found to personally insult me in their answers to other people's questions "don't listen to barbie, her last question was about digestive biscuits"

I really didn't want to make it private, but I spent 2 days (!) on the phone to Yahoo! and as well as dealing with the bullying I was being subjected to they said I had to do it, at least for a while. I even accidentaly deleted my fans/contacts but have managed to get most of them back. Even blocking culprits does not always help as it is easy to open a new account - indeed I was cloned last week by someone who did that to further attack me - it begs belief really.

This place can be really horrible. My partner's son wanted to come on here but I have banned him because there is no way children should be seeing what some users subject others to / get subjected to on here.

I hope to one day in the future to not have a private Q&A but for the time being it is a necessity I'm afraid.

Keep a look out for my Q's if you want to!

My profile is private because I have had people go back through my questions and answers and report a number of ones all on the same day. My ex also comes on this site to see what I am up to so I have to make sure that he can't see my q and a.

I add people as my contacts if I like their q and a's.

It is annoying that these measures need to be taken to stop the trolls/stalkers but unfortunately they are the ones that ruin it for everybody.

Here's a star to make up for the private profile :D

I think you will find a lot of people who are highly critical of other people and high handed generally hide their Q&As because although they are keen to look at and critisise others Q&A history they are not so keen for their changing views to go under the microscope.

EDIT - I have just read the other answers so far - I had no idea people hounded others - maybe I will make my network private. Sorry but perhaps its for the best?

Sorry Welshcake, I agree. I was "hounded" by a troll after I posted an answer they didn't like, that's why all my info is now private. It's always the same story ... the few ruining it for the many. If they banned the privacy facility, a lot of good people would leave this site.

Sorry but there are trolls that have gone through and violated old Q&As..Yahoo still hasn't made them so they cant be violated...even the resolved ones can be violated.
Thats how I ended up with 1 account deactivated and another suspended..but ever since I made them private...I have had no violations.

I only made mine private after being the subject of a hate campaign, in which certain members decided it was great fun to go through all my previous answers and mock and humiliate myself and my child.
I don't like having to make everything private, but I also didn't like having to wade through odious and disgusting posts about my bi polar amongst other things

I had to because too many Ron Paul supporters were stalking me like a pack of rabid dogs. Scary.

Hi Welshy, like you I had a spate of getting hate mail etc etc but what I do now is I print them off, and stick them on the wall in the sh#t house in at my office! I know alot have chosen to go private, seems a shame it has to come to that.
