to find the sale price:
orig. price x 60% (because 100%= orig. price less 40%)
let x = orig. price
$32= 40% of the orig. price
so, sale price= x - 32

.6x= x-32
32= x- .6x
32= .4x
32/.4= .4x/.4
$80=x

so, the sale price of the jacket is 80-32 =$48

check:
(in this case)
orig. price= sale price / 100%- %reduced
i.e. orig. price= sale price / 60%

80= 48/ 60%
80= 80

it checks ☻

= $32.00 / 40%
= $32.00 / 0.4
= $80.00

Answer: $80.00

Proof (Savings: Original price less 60% of original price):
= $80.00 - ($80.00 * [100% - 40%])
= $80.00 - ($80.00 * 60%)
= $80.00 - ($80.00 * 0.6)
= $80.00 - $48.00
= $32.00
