Mary used to work in the village post office till they closed it. I don't think anyone looked down on her. No, me and Mary think they do a great job.

Many people complain about the attitudes of shop staff here in the Uk but if they spent any time working in retail they would realised many people talk to you like a piece of shite.
Your there to help but people say things to you that you'd never accept from family or friends never mind a stranger.
I'd be spending the rest of my life in prison if i'd punched the number of people who deserved it.
The hours are long, the pay is very poor and yes. your really looked down on by most people to the extent many workers say 'oh, i just work in a shop' because they are embarrassed about it.
Your extremely lucky if you find a store where it's fun to work and a good atmosphere, most of them are either chaotic or incredibly boring and for the majority it really is a 'hassle' job.
The only part of it worth being there for is moving up the ladder into management where at least the money gets better, i'm out of retail now and would never go back.
Remember, when your in a shop speak to these people in a nice way, treat them with respect and they will then go out od their way to help you.
Shout, scream, demand and you might think you got what you wanted but i bet that nice guy who was just in 5 minutes earlier got better service and a much better deal.

I have worked in a couple of large department stores (on nail bars as a nail technician so I actually needed a qualification to get the jobs), I had all sorts of people look down their noses at me and talk to me like I was missing part of my brain.
It's shocking because the ones that are snobby are usually the ones with no class. It's not like they were brains of britain themselves or had a Phd in Rocket science.
I found what annoyed them most was when I was super polite and smiley to them!!!!!
Tell Mary that as long as she was good at her job (which I dont doubt she was) then they have no right to look down their noses at her.

If people are going to look down on shopworkers
perhaps they had better not shop.
Of course they do a great job. (Although a smile
wouldn't hurt sometime - and I hate it when I am
being served while they have a conversation
with someone next to them - this is where they need
training some of them)
I worked in a Pharmacy and I can honestly say I never felt
that and I had lots of customers coming - just for a chat!

i worked in a store in the mall here in the US, and I know that people looked down on me. People expected me and my co-workers to do every little thing for them. They unfolded the clothes, left tons of things in the dressing rooms, and yelled if you looked at them the wrong way. They sometimes treated us as if we were their servants.
Not all customers are like that, but there are some out there that do look down on those in service jobs. I think if you've ever worked a service job you are way more likely to appreciate just what those people do for you.
that's just my opinion.

I regrert that some shop workers look upon their job as one that has little worth or standing. These workers treat customers as poorly as they themselves expect to be treated.
However a good shop worker or should i say salesperson will always be a pleasure to deal with and will no be looked down upon.
I believe that customers will react to the attitude of the shop staff.

Depends if the customer is 6ft 4 and the shop assistant is 4ft 9 then they are going to look down on them.
It is true though, people treat shop assistants, cafe workers etc like sh*t. I don't but I have witnessed it. Usually its women who offend the most.

As with many occupations there are good and bad.
Most are professional, polite, and quick to serve. Sadly a few are rude, surly, slow, chat to each other and ignore customers etc. etc. These people are the ones that get the bad name.

Shop workers do a good and necessary job whether they work in the local corner shop or Harrods. I certainly don't look down on them and don't know anyone who does.

Maybe it was because the shop workers were 5 foot tall and all the shoppers were 6 foot tall, so inevitably they will look down on them.
What is your opinion you are always giving us Mary's?
