How would you feel if someone took a photo of you and decided that your child was indeed Madeleine McCann, went to the papers, your picture was then plastered all over the news shows and papers forcing you to come forward and prove your child isn't Madeleine.

Or if someone came up to you and 'just grabbed her' in the beleif she was the missing girl? This is what many people suggest we should do if we suspect we see Madeleine.

Imagine being on holiday and eating dinner (as a family, there's a novelty) and people start whispereing and taking pictures on their mobile phone all becuase your child bears a passing resemblence to Madeleine.

How many more lives will be impacted due to the negligence of 2 selfish parents?

Kez (classy name you have there) I am reffering to the 'many' answers that have been posted here along the lines of 'If I thought it was maddy I would march right up there and take her'. Scary stuff.

And you guess wrong, I am a parent.

Clarence Mitchell says: “This Spanish couple did the right thing and we urge others to do the same.” So if you see ‘Madeleine McCann’ you too should go to the papers and appear on the radio? Why not just quietly hand over the prints to the police and deal with it? Why make it another chapter of the sorry media circus that rolls on and on?

Kez - you didn't answer the question though did you? Do you understand the concept of asking and answering?

I am glad that they used the eye as an id as its the one thing I was shouting in the store, "look at her eyes its not maddie its my daughter"

My daughter looks alot like her & we get funny looks & the odd picture taken. I was furios at first and nearly lamped this guy..... when I realised why they do it I kind of understood. as my worst nightmare for this came true whilst doing the weekly shop in our local store, I noticed this couple following me, my kids were playing up & the 1 that looks like maddie was doing the usuall 3 year old thing of kicking screaming etc. as she wanted to stay in the toy section. I walked off about 20 feet to try & show my child I was going anyway & as i turned round to check her this couple had grabed her and a man was shouting call the police, we have maddie !

you can imagine, im a big bloke so went storming in to get my child. I was very angry the police were called & we were all calmed down. I will never forget this & we have had to register with the police in our town & pictures of our daughter circulated within the force of a lookalike & change my daughters hair.

I don't think anyone is being advised to grab a child if they believe her to be maddie. Just to go over and have a chat with the parents and the child should be ok. My Friends little girl is extremely similar to missing Maddie and she says she would be fine with someone coming over and talking to her about her daughter. The frightening thing is no one has ever approached her, She has to drive through customs very regularly and no one gives her a second look. Her daughter is so like Maddie it's scary (except for the eyes) I question as to whether any of the authorities are actually bothering to look. If I didn't know her I would ask but the police and customs etc are not bothered at all.

You are right and I don't think anyone in their right mind would run up and grab the child. There's always going to be a few nutters who will go to extremes but i think the majority have agreed they'd try to get a photo on their camera phone, follow the people and call the police immediately.

As for your other point, I would be fine about being approached by anyone who thought my kid was Maddie. i'd be happy to wait for police to investigate because i think these sightings have to be checked out. I think my inconvenience is worth sacrificing in this case.

I draw the line at someone grabbing her and legging it down the street.

I cannot believe some of things I am reading. Those who think she was abducted by some sicko is condoning this. What if it is a pedo ring or something. Now they know there is a cute little girl in Morocco and what town she lives in that looks just like Madeleine. Maybe she will end up being next now that this supposed sicko has seen her face plastered all over the paper. I would sue if my childs name or face was in the papers without my permission. God knows what sicko would be looking to find thier next victim to prey on. My goodness...how many of you parents would care less that your childs face and where they live would be out there and you don't care and think it is ok is baffleing to me.

We had a missing little girl several years back from my neighborhood. The police spotted me with my daughter who did look similar to the missing child and stopped us more than once when we were out together.........even came by my house as results of a report they received that she had been spotted there. I really didnt mind that. It was understandable and they were doing their job.
But, had a stranger came up and tried be a hero and "just grab her" thinking it was the missing child or something crazy like that then thats going way too far and they would have a problem.
My advice to anyone who believes they have spotted a missing child or missing person. Observe, try to take in as much detail as possible. Get the license plate number and all that good stuff. And call the cops right away, let them handle it from there.

Honestly, Heathermk2, i would think most parents of little blond girls like Madeleine would feel deeply for the McCanns and would not grudge the extra attention, however disturbing, in the hope that Madeleine will one day be really sighted.

One cannot give up hope & stop looking just to avoid some kind of inconvenience. Its not as if the little Madeleine look-a-likes are in any danger.

Most parents of little blond girls would, or rather should, empathise with the McCanns on this.

Mmmm - How would you feel if your child has been missing for the past five months. Are you telling me and everyone else that you would not be doing everything in your power to find that child?

I wish people would stop going on about how the parents had made a mistake. This is now NOT the point. The point is an innocent child is missing, and callous ignorant people like you can only focus on the parents mistake. Shame on you.

I would hope that if I was the parent of a little girl that looked someone like madeleine and a member of the public suspected it was her, then I would work with them, agree to stay until the Police arrived to confirm she was not in fact madeleine. I imagine things would only get nasty if I tried to run off, and refused to co-operate. I understand that if someone believes they have seen her then they need to check this out

This is such a sad question. My daughter is ten now and I
know that if she were missing (god forbid) I of course would
be looking at every child that may resemble her.
So what if someone makes a mistake. They still have their daughter don't they? The people that were plastered over
the papers yesterday and today had not even heard of 'Madeleine' until the press actually approached them?
As long as people react - the search for Maddie will go on.
Minxy.

Under the circumstances I think most people would understand a mistaken identity.

Even the Moroccan Farmer Father of Bushra says that Bushra does resemble Madeleine and he was happy to show her off properly to the world to prove she was his child.

I think maybe JUST YOU would be offended and maybe smack someone or give them a mouthful over it. Am I right?
