My sister baby girl name is Maura. Most of my friends said that Maura is an antique name. Not very pleasing to the ear. They said its an ugly name now a days..Is this true? I myself do not like the name Maura either ha ha ha. what do you think yahoo answer member?

It's an older name. Not too popular with people in my generation, but it's not ugly. 282 baby girls in the US were named Maura in 2006. It was 922 out of 1000 registered names. I think it's sweet. I get the feeling it's Irish in origin. Okay, I looked it up, it is Irish/Welsh.

I like the name Maura. Actually Laura and Mary are both family names for me, and this would be a nice variation. This is actually a form of Maire (Mary) and is celtic/gaelic and means sea of bitterness. I do like the name, but not the meaning, so I would probably not use it.
I like Maeve much better, and also Esme.

NO i have not even heard of it...I've heard of Laura, or Lorina, I think Maura is pretty unusual.

I like Maura. It's different and unique. It's very uncommon. As long as your sister likes it...that's all that matters.

I actually really like it. it's different. Kind of like Laura with a twist. It's not like the name Amanda... I always knew 5 different Amandas throughout school. Maura is exotic without being common exotic...if that makes sense...

My name is Maura. & first and for most you can eat a bag of ***** because I love my name. Sure people pronounce it every which way wrong but who gives a damn. Still beats people with basic *** names like Katie or Brittany. I'd also like to add that any Maura's I've met are ******* legendary.
