Once again, Is it true 'laugh on cue' shown on primetime sitcoms is a marketing strategy?

If it is, that really kinda sucks doesnt it? It kinda cheapens the focus on the show and actors itself like theyre just pawns for marketing instead of doing it for the love of acting.... or?

I loved it in 'Friends' (for example) when someone came into the room and said 'hello' and the 'audience' howled with laughter! hehe THAT is why I couldnt stand to watch it. Absolutely pathetic.
