If a printer driver has become corrupted, this error message can display when you open the Windows 2000 Printers control panel or when you attempt to print from within an application.
Solution:
In order to fix this problem, you must remove all installed printers and their associated drivers, delete some items from the Windows Registry, and then reinstall the printers.
1. Open the Printers control panel, right-click each printer, and select Delete.
2. Select Server Properties from the File menu, select the Drivers tab, and remove each of the installed printer drivers.
3. Click Start and select Run.
4. Start Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Open field and clicking OK.
5. Open each of the following keys and delete any items that you find in them, but do not delete the keys themselves:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\PRINT\ENVIRONMENTS\WINDOWS NT X86\DRIVERS\Version-2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\PRINT\ENVIRONMENTS\WINDOWS NT X86\DRIVERS\Version-3
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CONTROLSET001\CONTROL\PRINT\ENVIRONMENTS\WINDOWS NT X86\DRIVERS\Version-2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CONTROLSET001\CONTROL\PRINT\ENVIRONMENTS\WINDOWS NT X86\DRIVERS\Version-3
6. Open each of the following keys and delete any nondefault items (see list below) that you find in them:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\PRINT\Monitors
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CONTROLSET001\CONTROL\PRINT\Monitors
The list of default items you should leave in the keys include:
AppleTalk Printing Devices (when Services for Macintosh is installed)
BJ Language Monitor
Local Port
PJL Language Monitor
Standard TCP/IP Port
USB Monitor
Windows NT Fax Monitor (when a Fax Modem is installed)
7. Open each of the following keys and delete items that you find in them, but do not delete the keys themselves:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\PRINT\Printers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CONTROLSET001\CONTROL\PRINT\Printers
8. Close the Registry Editor.
9. Restart the computer.
10. Reinstall the necessary printers and the associated drivers.

If you are using XP, why not do a system restore to prior to date/time you removed the software. Then double check what you are removing, do it 1 at a time and test.

Try checking the paper supply, ink cartridge/s, etc. Good luck.
