Do a search on cognitive disorders. Why? Depression is often noted for the negative thought processes that flow through the mind of a depressed person. Depressed people often lack the ability to think positively. My own theory, from experience is that monopolar depresssions actually start as bipolar expressions. Then the brain "overcompensates" by adjusting it's levels of neurotransmitters (ie: dopamine), to remove the "hyper" activity of the neuron synapses, to a lower level, and the person then becomes monopolar depressive. It's just my theory, I know of no evidence or research to support this notion. Anyway, I highly recommend reading the book: "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by David D. Burns, M.D., published in 1980. It's available in paperback at almost any good bookstore, as it is a very famous book, and only costs about $9. An added benefit is you really only have to read the first chapter, 50 pages, to understand what causes depression, and how a person can cure themselves. The rest of the book gives examples of how to do this, and some other interesting topics, perhaps some are related to your question, or at least a source to look into. The secret, pretty clearly stated in the book is to think positively, get those positive thoughts back in order, thus leading to eventual permanent, normal levels of neurotransmitters. Read the first 50 pages VERY CAREFULLY, and you'll understand the nature and cure for depression. When everything else had failed, this book saved my life.

Well, the advantages are that some things, especially in the early stages of research, are difficult to quantify and you may be trying to determine what those factors are and what qualities they have so that you can objectify them. The advantage of quatifying them in some way is that you see what factors or observables appear to be important without just gessing what you think is important. Sometimes you can do so by training observers to seek out certain factors to back up your own results and leave reduce your personal subjectivity. The disadvantages of this method are that it is not quantifiable on an interval or ratio scale, thus it limits the statistics you can apply to simple descriptive statistics, at most nonparametric statistics such as a chi-square or Kruskal-Wallis Nonparametric Test of Variance. These tests are usually considered to have less statistical power and provide less informative information than say a parametric Analysis of Variance. For one thing, there may not be a measure of the size of the difference, just that it is statistically significant and, when there is more than one variable, you do not know the proportion that each factor adds to to information you obtain on the dependent variable.

the main premise of positivism is that there is an underlying truth in forms of universal patterns which encompass our daily experience. its counterpart is phenomenology which believes that reality is in the experience, lived and seen.

Quantitative research methods believes in that tradition of positivism. With the methods designed to traverse objectivity, we would find those theories and facts that underly social phenomena through relatively objective methods such as surveys and statistics. Notice that this is more macroscopic or extensive because we want to find universal patterns.

Paired with phenomenology, is the qualitative which is more focusing on daily lived experience. It only focuses on specific cases of a phenomenon (intensive) and draws out the analysis from these data.
