Political theory provides for a systemized programme of management of a country's political, economic & social dealings that will hopefully appeal to a electorate or, where one doesn't exist, to the people controlling economic activity & give them some idea of how the country's fortunes might progress.

The British military has a saying: When the battle starts, all the planning goes out the window. Politicians always find this when they get into power. Things never go to plan & solutions need to be found as they go along. Often they'll pinch ideas from opposing theories.

Political theory, as what you read in a Political Science text book I presume? It's very relevant however, it is being ignored. The theories still count even when people don't understand why.
The mass media has taken terms and theories from Political Science Text books and attached their meanings to them that are nowhere near accurate. But, people who don't know any better go with it and accept it as fact.
Two examples of this are the terms "Liberal" and "Middle Class". The media has completely distorted their true meanings, so the reader, viewer, or listener just assumes that they are correct in the usage.
Political Theory is still relevant though.
