I agree with dels replies...Alphabetic is the way to go. Genres are way too subjective. Keep it simple and consistent so you'll be able to find everything easily. I now have 5,872 CDs (all originals, not copies) which occupy a whole living room wall on custom built shelves. I use 3 main catergories, "Artist Albums", "Soundtracks" and "Compilations" and everything is alphabetized. As backup, it's taken me almost 6 years to rip everything I own to 1.6 terabytes of hard drive space!! I try not to play the CD's anymore because it's much faster accessing everything using using Winamp.

I have around 1,000 CDs. They are arranged alphabetically by artist, chronologically within each artist and compilations are at the end, arranged alphabetically.
Simple, easy and logical (although my missus thinks I'm an anorak...)

Alphabetically - but make sure you leave a decent gap at the end of each 'letter' for any new purchases, that way you don't have to move them all each time you add another one to your collection.

I have the exact same problem with my DVD's (though I've only got 200). I have 3 basic sections: children's, Mum movies & Dad movies. lol. Then they're alphabetised. You could just alphbetise the lot of them

Simple is always best. You already have your answer - sort alphabetically. You will always be able to find what you are looking for. I agree, leave spaces between for new purchases.

you could just get a very large MP3 player and then put the CD's in the loft. Job Done.

I once stuck them together by colour, sounds insane and it is a bit, however I found it just as easy to find everything.
