I would definitely recommend seeing a female physician for this especially since this is your first time. When you make the appt let the office know that you want to talk to the doctor in plainclothes first when you go in.

Let the doctor know that this is your first time there and that you have something you need to discuss with her but are very nervous. If the doctor is really good she will help you relax by answering any and all questions about the exam itself even before the exam. Then during the actual exam she will explain what she's doing as she does it.

With the pelvic exam when it hurts one of the things it can mean is something wrong, but otherwise it shouldn't hurt. Being nervous about the exam can also make it hurt more so please try to relax. As for the pap smear, that is done with a special brush to take some of the cells from the cervix that then get sent off to the lab for analysis to make sure that there is nothing out of the ordinary with them.

Based on the kind of pain you have it's possible that you might have endometriosis, but the doctor will try to help you figure out what's going on.

If you have any other questions for me please feel free to e-mail or IM me off site any time.

Constable,
You really worrying, aren't you? For your first exam, that's pretty normal. There is some pain with a Pap smear, but just take Tylenol or something similar before your appointment. That helps.

A Pap smear is a tiny biopsy of your cervix, to check for cancer. The doctor should do an internal exam that is only minor pain while the doctor checks the organs he or she can in the area. It doesn't last. There should also be a breast exam, to check for lumps. Ask the doctor to explain to you how to do it at home.

It's common to have painful periods, I did. In the US there is a new medicine for women who have very painful periods. I don't know if you have it there. Your gynecologist should be happy to look for it, and help you find the best solution for you.

Talking about this to the doctor for the first time feels awkward. The doctor has had hundreds of patients before you, so this is no big deal to them. Remember, they chose this profession to help people, so just tell them why you are there.

I cannot comment on prices and funding, because I don't live there. Don't worry, it'll be fine.

Has this only just started? If so then you really do need to see a doctor about it. Have you a well womens clinic in your area. they tend to have a nurse or female doctor that can examine you. I did look this up for you and i came up with a sight that has the information for you. See below. Any change in your mentrual cycle needs to be checked out, it could mean a number of things, and most likely nothing to be of huge concern and that cant be fixed. Good Luck
