Sky news this morning is presenting this as "breaking news", with digital ticker tape on a loop at the bottom of the screen informing us that Beckam is flying home to be with his father. Whilst I have every respect for the Beckam family, in what way is this an item for national news? Isn't this a private family matter?

Steven, it might not be breaking news but it is still sad for the family so your remarks seem a bit insensitive to me. Plenty of us love soccer, and enjoy seeing Beckham play. The Q is about news reporting

Swany, this is not about not caring, it's about much more important things going on in the world. At the moment I am writing this, the Burmese army is ready to shoot its own people. THAT'S news.

No i don't think so. I'm not into the Beckhams myself if a father's illness is not something i would laugh about. No matter how much i got bored of the Beckhams, i just wish his father will make it.
I think by right it shouldn't be breaking news but we have such a celebs cult here and anywhere else in the world too! That for Sky it was deemed breaking news. Having said that ... It could also be that they were running out of other news. That happens too.

No that isn't the breaking news , the breaking news is that David Beckham flew from LA on a Wednesday night and arrived at Heathrow today! How amazing is that?
I love it that in New York the Beckhams were voted as the most over-rated celebrity couple. Fabulous.
I give them till the end of the American Soccer Season out there and they'll be back here. Boring us again.

I agree, with all the other things that are going on in the world and to put it into perspective, a footballers father is ill, and this is the biggest news on the Planet?
Whilst i also accept Beckham is probably the biggest Name in Football, it is not ground breaking news, to say he (beckham) must of been crying because he is wearing dark glasses. Is just ridiculous of course hes upset his dad has just suffered a serious heart attack. Leave the family alone to come together and support the dad in his recovery

Who cares Beckham stay in England we don't want you here. We are tired of hearing about you and how you are going to make soccer popular. I'm sorry but it just won't happen. It maybe fun too play and plenty of school aged children do play it but we would much rather watch Football, Baseball, Basketball,Hockey, Golf, Nascar, Tennis,WNBA, Bowling, etc..... before watching such a boring sport called soccer! You didn't do anything here too resurrect it and make it even come close to being popular. I'm glad that you were injured because now there's no talk of you and how great you are because guess what you're not that great! There are a lot better athletes in the NFL then there are on a soccer field. A little trip and you cry like a baby!

Beckam's get a life!
I feel sorry for the children with a mum with a pig nose and a father who can't say an intelligent word, and their future will be under pressure if they do good or bad because who they are.
My mum have just one lounge working and on the winter time she's always ill because of that so who cares about them, feel sorry for the old man do.

Just goes to show, how the media like to latch onto Celebrities.Beckam is a good boy eh !.... Well done. Rather pathetic reporting, to say the least, scrapping the barrel....?
I am in total agreement with the Questioner, Yes, this is a private matter, hardly "breaking news "......Unless of course connected to the McCanns...? Doesn't he support them,
financially I think ....?

Breaking news is a phrase sky news use far too frivolously, they put any new news as breaking, and if there is no new news they use the term breaking for the main story, no matter how long its been going on.
I think they do it so people will think they are a great, have it before anyone else news channel.
PRATS!!!

The less attention we pay to the Beckhams and the likes of these "celebrities" the better. Breaking news it's not!
*******
swany: I'm sure the Beckhams are going through a difficult period with David's father being ill, but that doesn't make it breaking news.
8 people being killed by the military junta in Burma whilst thousands of monks stage a huge popular uprising - that's news.
Outbreak of diseases to livestock that affects the livelihood of farmers - that's news.
A bridge collapsed in VietNam killing and injuring people - that's news.
The father of a "celebrity" is not breaking news.

Its breaking news?
Nuts... maybe something mention on a slow news day but never ever breaking news. Except in Hello magazine!
They should really get rid of those breaking news flash things running across the page when there is no breaking news! Its ok NOT to have breaking, life changing news. i wish people would stop making newsreading so dramatic!
