it used to run cool. I've changed the coolant, running Sierra now. Could it be the thermostat?

Because that's what a thermostat does. It opens when it gets to operating temperature. If it was staying cool before, you had a leaky thermostat. You probably just frred up the sticky thermostat when you changed coolant.

It's not clear to me whether you changed the thermostat. If your thermostat hasn't been changed in 10 years, then change it. Use an infrared non-contact temperature gun as below and point it at the thermostat bell housing. Then you'll really know what's happening to the engine coolant temperature as the engine warms up. You can't depend on dash gauges for professional engine coolant temperature and oil pressure measurements.

the old thermosat was staying open. the new one is working right. it does not open until the motor is at operating temp.
