I'm a clinical instructor and I want to test the validity of my future test question on Human Sexuality subject for health care professionals... You could be a registered nurse, physician, PT, OT, RT, and etc...

Scenario: A hospitalized 15-year-old boy is for discharge today. The health worker is about to give the last dose of the medication. He/She knocks the door but decides to enter any way because no one is answering. When he/she enters the room, he finds the patient mast.urbat.ing inside the bathroom and the bathroom door is slightly open. The patient does not notice the healthcare worker coming in. What is the healthcare worker's MOST approprite action?
A. Scold the patient for the inappropriate behavior
B. Leave the room immediately and quietly to provide privacy
C. Knock on the bathroom door to make the presence known to the patient
D. Close the bathroom door & wait inside the patient's room

Tell me your honest response to this question: A, B, C, or D.
Thanks...

I'm going to go with B.

I would leave the room immediately and then knock on the door really loudly, walk in and say, "Excuse me, it's lunch time (or whatever it's time for)."

The most appropriate action is "B", with this addendum, after a few minutes have passed, the health worker should return to the room, knock, open the door slightly and call out the patient's name. If an affirmative response is received, the health worker should proceed into the room and administer the last dose of medication as ordered, without mentioning having been in the room, earlier.

C. Knock on the bathroom door to make the presence known. He needs his last dose before he can be discharged and a health care worker's time is valuble.

My sister is an LPN and she has had to take the blood pressure of a man with a brain injury while he was masturbating. He would not stop...even after she asked to stop several times.

B.)

Since the pt about to get discharge anyway, which means that he is not in any immediate danger. Also the fact that medications can be given one hour before or after the prescribed time. So, you can just come back in 1/2 hour or so to give the medication.
Answer C is correct as well but 'B' is the MOST appropriate answer. This is an example of a critical thinking question.

I like "B" you can come back in a few minutes and give the med. "C" is a good answer as well but may startle the patient and as much as you think he will not notice you there he may wounder if you saw anything. Come back in a few - B is my answer
