They usually go to the 5 and dime store. The ones around here are huge, over ten feet long. They hire subcontractors that work for the Department of Defense to custom build their shells.

They build onto the open end of the shell, secreting shell material from their mantle.

Snails are not hermit crabs. Snail shells grow.......I think.
