Well someone said that as long as he can prove he bought it from someone else he is in the safe zone, that is completely untrue. It is also against the law to buy stolen property when you know someone has stolen it, or it is beyond obvious that they did. For instance, if someone is selling a brand new PS3 for $50 what do you think? Do you think, oh, he must be a nice guy wanting to sell stuff to people that can't afford the higher prices, or do you think, he must have hot (stolen) items that he needs to get rid of fast. You can and will be arrested for buying stolen items under these circumstances. However, if someone sells you a PS3 for $500, you have no reason to believe it is stolen, meaning he is ok. Unless he is sure that the person stole it. Then he's still not ok. Your best bet when faced with something like this is to not buy the item, and report the person to the police. He will keep himself out of jail and not have to pay a fine by doing this. If after he purchased it, and now he is unsure about if it was stolen or not, he should go to the police and tell them about it. If he does this, IF it is stolen they will be easier on him, if not just let him go anyway which is probably what they would do as long as he cooperates. If he goes to them, and it turns out that it isn't stolen, they will give him the laptop back, and probably thank him for being honest and coming in to see if it was stolen or not. Tell him not to keep it though, because if it does turn up stolen and it is traced he can be in alot of trouble if they find out that he knew it was stolen all along.

All I can say that neither my son or daughter ever had any problems. DO NOT leave your clothes in the washer or dryer. time it. make sure you are back before the cycle ends. Or just stay down there and do school work while your clothes wash. My son had an old army foot locker than he put his bank/credit cards/cash in. It also would put his Xbox in there if he was gone over night. My daughter had a drawer that locked in her dorm desk. She keep her bank stuff / cash in there Dorm room doors usually lock when the door closes. I have never heard of a student locking up their clothes and shoes. .

As long as your friend can prove he bought it from someone else, then he will be fine. If caught, at most he would have to return the laptop to the original owner, risking to lose the $400.

If he can't prove he bough it from someone else, then expect jail time, or sustitutive measures.
