Though you mention some truths.....you, my friend, sound rather ignorant. And victim mentality. And self-absorbed. And, quite frankly, if someone really said that to you, it was probably because you were being a jack*ss whining about some racial BS you invented in your head. Stop what?? When did they say it, and what the hell were you saying to them?? And I owe you nothing, just as you owe me nothing. Could it be, perhaps, the guy was trying to remind you that white folks also were involved in both the abolition and civil rights movements...? The abolition movement was around a long time before the Civil War.
Pot calling the kettle black, aye aye aye.
Red - To lie like that is both disrespectful and detrimental to your own credibility. Lincoln did not own slaves. Never did. He wasn't an abolitionist - but still never owned slaves. Not only am I a historian, but my father is a Lincoln expert....and even if neither of us had the backgrounds we do, I would not choose to so matter-of-factly speak about something I obviously know nothing about. If you heard that, it is one of those pathetic urban legends....right up there with Tommy Hilfiger going on Oprah and saying he hates black people. Do you believe tabloids too?
Um, no, sorry you're still incorrect. What reenactors are you working with, as I've been around them since I was a small child and never heard such. No credible scholar has suggested Lincoln owned slaves, nor is there any evidence he could have. Hell, the man couldn't have afforded it if he wanted to! And even though he was not an abolitionist and did not intend on abolishing slavery through politics, he still did not support it and was very much against slavery, as anyone who researches him, his speeches, and his writings can easily determine. In addition to the research of many scholars before me, I have census records, slave schedules, and a plethora of other historical documents to easily throw down your statement, and I'd be more than happy to email them to you. Even the newspaper articles from his time, from writers attempting to insult and dishonor Lincoln, could only say that some of his family and ancestors owned slaves, and that his wife's family were prominent slave owners - but never him. In trying to taint him with slave-involvement, do you not think these people who were alive during his time and trying to dig up dirt could have found evidence of his ownership of slaves? I encourage you to prove me wrong, as it is always enlightening to discover what you have known for decades is a lie. I don't believe that is the case this time, in fact I'm positive of it, but I would certainly prefer someone showing me a truth I was not aware of despite extensive research rather than continue to believe something that is wrong. No offense darlin, but I'm certainly not holding my breath on this one.
For the record....I've never known Fritz Klein nor Michael Krebs to suggest Abe owned slaves.

Er, huh?
Thanks for mentining the whole union thing- the south's main issue was that the people making laws had NO idea where they were coming from, whereas the north didn't want the US to splinter off into a bunch of little countries and turn into a new Europe. (not dissing europe, here, just they had a differnt vision for the future of the country.) That's the severely abridged version, anyway.
But who is suggesting different races pay eachother? I'm lost.

I never said blacks need to pay me, and I find it equally offensive that I should have to pay black people for an action I did not preform. The main reason that the civil war was fought was over state's rights. Slavery was a factor, but the biggest factor was the loss of political and industrial growth the southern states were recieving, and they demanded to be treated the same in terms of political power and industry as the northern states.

... someone is suggesting blacks need to pay for the Civil War???? Tell me you are joking...
This is the problem with reparations... everybody starts thinking of how to exploit history and each other, rather than spending energy on making today's world what we want. Some things can never be made right - except by defiantly creating a better present and future.

I agree with you! I wish people would wake up and re-educate themselves on the Civil War. I hate that the schools do not teach the real reason for the war. The war was started because the states did not believe the government was doing their job and by the constitution they have the right to succeded and make their own government.
Many people do not know that Abe him self owned slaves. It was for slaves until the war started the whole slavery thing and he decided he better "jump on the band wagon"
And No I do not read tabloids at all, they are nothing but a crock of *dung*. All they are used for is to sell and make money to gulliable people who believe everything they are told/read.

I don't know where this is coming from. People are saying 'blacks need to pay us'? I've never heard that before. I know my family doesn't need to pay those of the black race. My ancestors were poor dirt farmers and lived off of what they grew in the garden and meat from rabbits, and a pig now and then. In my area races seem to get along great. At community events I am always proud to see many races in attendance, and especially the young people socializing together.

Why? Why, as a white person, should I give a black person my money, for something that I happened a very long time ago, that I had nothing to do with and received no personal benefit from, /just because I'm white/? I've never heard any reasonable justifications for that...
