according to recent studies
the frontal brain lobe ( the part responsible for rational behavior) does not mature until twenty-something.

if we feared too early in life, mankind would never make advancement, trying new and different things that appear dangerous in some way, shape or form.

dangerous things that we have learned to live with:
flying
deep sea diving
diving
racing cars
owning guns
confronting other people
boxing (and most sports)
etc
etc
etc
