Around the resort areas on the Strip and in most casinos there's alot of security and you will be safe. I would not suggest venturing outside these areas without being in a group or without the company of a local you know. FYI.. Vegas is just as safe or dangerous as any other major US city, use the same saftey precautions and instincts you would in the nearest big city to you. Do not let CSI influence you too much!

Las Vegas is as safe as any city in the US - Yes, there is crime. There's also crime in New York, Miami, Topeka, and anytown USA. You need to use common sense. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times Don't wander into unpopulated areas - especially after dark. Don't be intoxicated and alone. Have at least one sober person in your group to make sure nobody does anything dangerously stupid.

In the common areas of the casinos (with the only exceptions being the restrooms and guestrooms), you are under surveillance every second. Maybe not you specifically, but if something happens, there's somebody watching. There is also hotel security - and many of the Strip hotels have top-notch security. There are also Las Vegas Metro Police officers patrolling the Strip and Downtown areas 24/7.

Remember: shows like CSI (and Law and Order, etc.) take a LOT of dramatic license. As my friend who's NYPD used to tell me when I asked about something that happened on these shows, "Cartoons are not real". =)

I used to live in Las Vegas. Granted, that was 7 years ago, but I think I have some advice. If you stick to the strip or the Freemont Street experience, and you stay in crowds and with people you know, it should be okay. People get into trouble when they let their guard down. Don't drink to the point that you're drunk and don't go off somewhere with someone you just met. It sounds like common sense, but it's amazing the stupid things people will do in Vegas, simply because it is Vegas. The casinos are very distracting- that's part of their scheme, all the noise and flashing lights and bright, garish carpets overstimulate your brain and you lose track of just how long you've been sitting at that slot machine, and how many free drinks you've had... That's another area where people get into trouble. To me, Vegas is not a relaxing vacation, lol. The lights are breathtaking, and some of the casinos have shows out front that are a sight to see, but it really is important that you pay attention to where you are and who's around you. It can be fun, but it takes work.

Here is a fact that many people don't understand. The T.V dramas that happen on T.V. are not real. They have no reflection on reality.
In Las Vegas, the rules for a big city apply. Do not go in to a back ally at 3 a.m.
Avoid the neighborhood starting west of the Stratosphere and going north to down town. Inside the casino's and on the main streets things are safe and you will have a good time.
In the future remember that T.V. dramas are not real life.

I would say las vegas is about as safe as any other city. Depends where you go ofcourse. Every city has it's bad areas.
I'm a single female and have went when I was 22, 23 & 24 all times i have walked up & down the strip & gone to shows alone with no problems.

So just like with anywhere, you have to be street smart and be aware of your surroundings. I practice the same things as when I'm in my home town: hold onto my purse, make sure no ones following me, dont set things down and walk away from them
Also, when your drinking, only accept drinks it you saw it being made and it was handed directly to you from the bartender an keep your hand over your drink at all times!

have fun!

Remember CSI is a TV show. Vegas is no safer or worse than any other city.

You have to use your head. Watch your surroundings. Don't walk off the strip and stay in well lit areas. Stay where there are people.

If you are in a casino and feel uncomfortable, ask security. The are there to help.

I've been there many times and only felt uncomfortable once. And it was my fault. I walked in an area that I shouldn't have, and knew I was being followed.

Just use your head! You'll be fine

BTW...lots of good points from the other posters....

I was there with my Mom in June. We stayed at Bally's, and cruised (walking) around the Strip late into the evening (it was like 3 am!) There were so many other people around and having a great time--what a blast ! We also went on the monorail (which I highly recommend--get a pass for that)

I have to tell you---I never even once felt unsafe in any of these places! I wouldn't go anywhere off the Strip at night from what I have heard, but on the Strip there are tons of people. And the casinos have security guards, too. You just need to be aware of your surroundings as you would anywhere else.
Have a wonderful time !!!!!

I have lived here for 5 years. I usually go to the Las Vegas Strips when I get the chance. I am from Singapore but of course when I go to Las Vegas Strips, I will definitely have my camera around my neck. So far its been safe for me. Just beware of suspicious characters when you're walking on the strips. Check out this link before you visit Las Vegas to know more about it -- http://www.lasvegasnevada.gov/

it depends where you are in vegas. on the strip when its busy you can get your pocket picked, don't carry a open purse, and keep your money in your front pocket. when your down town stay around freemont street. when your in north las vegas at night take a gun with you. if you want to go off the strip. go to boulder highway, sams town better odds there. local casinos are smaller and are more watch full of guests. good luck and stay safe.
