Hackers are the least of your problems. Your biggest problem is your paying customers. Most e-book formats out there can be cracked rather easily, if you have the right software. So once someone buys your e-book, there's nothing to prevent them from sharing it with the whole world...

there are programs out there that let you deliver your digital files securely, you just gotta make an intensive research. It should be worth your while cause there are even beta versions that let you use the software for free. But the best tip is that you cannot store your files in a public folder where ftp can be accessed. Make sure if you deliver them through a download link you send via email after they paid that you have an expiration date for the product. You should also be able to track whether the e-book has been downloaded already.

Yes - tell you what we did. We found an open source "free" operating system.
We scrapped (deleted Microsoft Windows entirely) and installed "Puppy Lynux" a "free" loading operating system that does not allow hackers nor anybody else, to enter your computer - it simply disconnects the intruders by itself.
It also has a powerful virus detector and cancels viruses immediately.
It works pretty much the same way - don't be afraid of it.
