I can think of only one other reason.
Occupational hazard. It is a danger to be engaged in an activity at home or work where you can snag your ring on an object that is moving. Many fingers have been ripped off by this. Many people have had their fingers crushed by a rings.
People working around electrical hazards should not wear rings because they are very good conductors of electricity.
Professors can wear rings. I would be very suspicious of anybody else not wearing a wedding ring.

Safety!
If the person works with Electricity, engines, tools, ladders, vehicles, trees, etc....any ring is a safety hazard.
If the ring completes a circuit while he or she is working next to the battery in a car....Zap they just lost their ring finger, if not their hand to third degree burns!
If he snags the ring on an engine part, or a tool in use, or fall off a ladder, or a truck, or out of a tree, etc... the ring will slide up the finger taking much of the skin and ligaments with it...what the doctors will call a "degloving injury" Ouch!
Additionally there are personal reason for not wearing a wedding ring. My dad has never worn a wedding ring and my parents have been married 38 years. There's religious reason, for example some Quakers don't wear jewelery of any sort. There's also skin sensitivity issues.
I don't wear my wedding ring at work for safety reasons, and I don't wear it when I'm bowling because I'm left-handed and it gets in the way.
Also consider this, until the reletively recently men didn't wear wedding rings at all. It only came into vogue within the last 50 years or so.

There are legitimate reasons such as the type of job a person has. Many jobs that involve machinery require a person not wear any rings because they could get caught . They may not have been able to afford a ring when they got married. The ring may no longer fit and they don't want to have it adjusted.
Why would you think that if a person doesn't wear a ring the only reason could be that they want to mislead someone? The professor is obvious that he is married so he isn't misleading anyone.
My father has never worn a wedding ring. He was in the Marines when they got married. Money was tight and he wasn't allowed to wear one anyway. My mother has wedding rings but seldom wears them. She seldom wears any jewelry. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and neither have even thought of having an affair or misleading anyone. I doubt that anyone has ever been misled by the way they act either.

Here are some reasons why people don't wear them:
1) It's a 4 ct diamond and you lose it all the time so your husband locks it in his office safe.
2) You have another one that you prefer.
3) They don't fit your hands.
4) They are uncomfortable.
5) It's a safety hazard.
6) You don't care for jewelry.
7) You don't care for rings and the two of you planted a tree, instead.
8) You misplaced it.
9) It's being cleaned or re-sized.
10) It's around your neck on a chain.
These are just some reasons that come to mind...

My husband was a mechanic and wearing his ring wasn't a good idea. I know because we almost had to get it cut off when he hurt his hand and the ring that had bent wouldn't come off and started cutting into his swelling finger. When he wasn't working he always wore it. That is except when he was home with the kids cooking, baking and washing dishes. Some people still only do the one ring. As long as they don't hide the fact they are married it doesn't really matter. Sometimes money can be a factor too.
So occupation, money, beliefs. Every couple like every person is different. Each couple has to make that decision on their own.

I have read some place that for certain jobs and stuff. Like guys that work with power lines and possibly any equipment that gives off an electrical charge or would have the possibility of getting caught in a machine at work, would be a legitimate reason. But yea as the other person said for a college professor I wouldn't see that as any kind of reason not to wear it at all. Though he could just not be one for jewelry though I would be very hurt if I was his wife and he wouldn't be proud to show his love and devotion to me to others, by wearing a ring. But that is just me.

You are totally missing the point, a ring is not a legal obligation when you get married, so there is no need for anyone to wear one if they choose not to. My hubby is a chef and some of the work they do would make it dangerous for him to wear a ring, so he doesn't wear it while he is working, if it is a choice of him possibly losing a finger or not wearing a ring I'd say don't bother wearing one. He wears it after work and at weekends. Just because something is not the "norm" does not mean it is wrong.

My stepdad doesn't wear a wedding band on his fat fingers.
LOL
I know there is no way he's ever cheating on my mom..... a commitment just does not have a lot to do with a ring.
Think about it. Rings don't stop people from cheating. They come off easily, and fit in the pocket. Not having a ring doesn't mean that you can't be faithful.
Some guy friends of mine even admit that they get more hits from women now that they are married and wearing rings! Unbelieveable!

There could be many reasons why someone doesn’t wear a wedding ring, but it could just be because they don't like wearing rings (as your friend said). It's a personal choice. The mere fact that someone chooses not to wear a ring does not mean they are out to mislead people.

My parents don’t wear rings. They had rings and used to wear them but just stopped wearing them. I’m not really sure why as far I can remember they’ve never worn rings. I just know they wore them because they’ve told me they did. My mom will sometimes wear a diamond ring my dad got her a few years ago. They said even if they wanted to wear their rings now they couldn’t because they’ve outgrown them. They will have been married 26 years Oct 9.
For people who don’t wear rings I kind see it being similar to those who don’t even bother with legal marriage anymore. Saying a piece of paper does not tell their love, some may feel the same way about rings. Plus some people are just not ring people.
